NKOSI JOHNSON
Pay tribute to this great hero

To many South Africans, Aids was nothing but a faceless disease until Nkosi Johnson captured our hearts. Together with his foster mother, Gail Johnson, Nkosi used his short life to fight hard to raise awareness of and destigmatise the disease.

In July 2000, this frail child stood up at the 13th International AIDS Conference in Durban and challenged the government to provide pregnant women with anti-retroviral drugs to stop the transmission of HIV from pregnant mother to child. A victim of discrimination because of his disease he also challenged South African's to care and accept people with Aids: "Care for us and accept us - we are all human beings. We are normal. We have hands. We have feet. We can walk, we can talk, we have needs just like everyone else. Don't be afraid of us - we are all the same."

Like his life, his recent death is a stark reminder of the continuous struggle of all South Africans to fight this pandemic. Share your condolences with his family and friends; pay tribute to this brave soul and make his fight more meaningful: use this forum to share your ideas on how we can work together to fight Aids.
